Parents want factual information and practical tips for effective parenting to prevent substance use. Local surveys show that parents have more influence than anyone else – including peers – on their child’s choice to drink alcohol or use drugs. Knowing that “My Choice Matters” encourages parents to learn how alcohol and drugs affect children and empowers them to speak often and honestly to their children to decrease the likelihood of alcohol and drug use.

My Choice Matters is a Cape-wide media campaign sponsored by the Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council that seeks to promote healthy behaviors. The campaign highlights ways that communities can provide positive choices. Research shows that misconceptions of the prevalence of risky behaviors can actually increase unhealthy behaviors among teens. Changing this perception and providing alternative activities can reduce unhealthy behaviors. In an effort to increase positive decisions among teens, the My Choice Matters campaign reinforces the positive behaviors of our community members and encourages healthy choices.
