The Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition is pleased to announce publication of a Position Statement outlining its public education and awareness strategy. Although significant numbers of people attempt suicide, suicide is not a common event. Yet when they occur, suicide threats, attempts and deaths ripple across all layers of a community. With suicide rates 1 ½ times higher than the state average, Cape Cod and the Islands have identified suicide prevention as a public health priority. Read the rest of this entry »
The Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition is hosting a community forum on June 21st from 6pm to 8pm at Barnstable High School Knight Auditorium to discuss suicide awareness and prevention. Elected officials and candidates have been invited to be part of this community-wide forum. May 6, 2010. The Department of Human Services has released a new publication Cape Cod Senior and Elder Residents in the 21st Century. The report is an analysis of the Cape’s demographics and data collected in the annual Monitoring the Human Condition study. The findings show there are 81,000 permanent year round residents of Barnstable County who are age 55 or older. Read the rest of this entry »

January 25, 2010. The Barnstable County Department of Human Services has published an Executive Summary of Monitoring the Human Condition on Cape Cod Study highlighting trends during the period 2004 – 2009. The study is one of the most comprehensive compilations of data collected on a county wide scale and provides a rich assessment of the overall community health of year round residents of Cape Cod. February 1, 2010 Barnstable County Commissioner Sheila Lyons, Co-Chair of the Cape and Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness, announced today that a new 24/7 homelessness prevention hotline is now available, to provide emergency overnight housing to local families and individuals who have lost their home and have no place to stay. The hotline, operated by Community Action Committee of the Cape and Islands, can be reached at 1-888-656-2233.

Mass 2-1-1 is an information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services. Consumers now need to know just one number when searching for resources in their community, and that number is 2-1-1. It is free, confidential, available 24/7 and multi-lingual translations are available. 2-1-1 can help consumers find any range of health and human services, including but not limited to: food pantries, thrift shops, assisted living, health care, legal assistance, housing assistance or financial assistance.
