Laughing Away the Blues – Fundraiser for Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition
The Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition will hold its inaugural fundraiser Laughing Away the Blues on Saturday July 7, 2012 from 6:00-10:00PM at the Ballymeade Country Club, 125 Falmouth Woods Road in North Falmouth. Steve Sweeney, a longtime Boston comedy club favorite who has also worked nationally, appearing in feature films and late-night television, will headline the event. Sweeney says “I am honored to be part of this event to increase awareness and also to celebrate life because what’s life without laughter?”

Tim Lineaweaver, Co-Chair of the Coalition, came up with the concept for the fundraiser several years ago and has been working over the past several months to plan the event. âThis is our first attempt at a fundraiser of this magnitude,â says Lineaweaver, âDepression and suicide have affected many of us and are serious health issues in our community that demand attention. Major depression is a risk factor for suicide but the good news is that itâs highly treatable. The Coalition has been instrumental in raising awareness of these issues to reduce the tremendous barriers people face in accessing treatment. The title of the event âLaughing Away the Bluesâ may raise a few eyebrows – but itâs certainly not meant to minimize the deep pain experienced by people who may be depressed but rather to acknowledge that itâs a difficult subject and that laughter can be a healing balm. We encourage everyone to join us on July 7 to support the work of the Coalition and to have a really fun night!â
Since 2009, the Coalition has been on the forefront of suicide awareness and prevention activities in the region and has sponsored quarterly community forums and trainings in towns across the Cape.
