Mass in Motion Wants You to Have Fun with Healthy Food!

Barnstable County Mass in Motion and Buy Fresh Buy Local Cape Cod recently teamed up to bring a Simple and Delicious Vegetable Recipes Cookbook and a colorful workbook to over 1,500 children in the town of Barnstable.

Simple & Delicious Vegetable Recipes Cookbook       Children's Workbook

Developed in Plymouth by Mass in Motion: Healthy Plymouth and Jordan Hospital, the cookbook was localized to the Cape Cod region before being distributed to families in the town of Barnstable with children in kindergarten through third grade. The interactive workbook distributed alongside the cookbooks was developed by Susan Bourque, Nutrition and Food Safety Educator for the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, to help encourage kids and their parents to have fun with their food.

Each cookbook contains over 70 easy to make recipes for a variety of fresh vegetables found in farmers’ markets on Cape Cod and the Islands. And preparation tips are included for every vegetable too, so you’ll never be left wondering exactly what part of fennel can be used for cooking. (The answer found on page 24: all of it!)

To make the cookbook most accessible, though, every recipe allows for frozen or canned veggies to be substituted. And the colorful booklet that accompanies each cookbook includes games for kids relating to the recipes and healthy tips for busy parents.

Barnstable West Elementary, Barnstable Community Horace Mann Charter Public School, Centerville Elementary, Hyannis West Elementary, and West Villages Elementary were among the schools that took part in this Mass in Motion initiative. But now everyone in our community can benefit from the online versions of the cookbook and the children’s workbook too!
