Welcome to Department’s New Staff Member – Kim Slade
New Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) Program Specialist, Kim Slade will coordinate aspects of Barnstable Countyâs SAPC grant. Kim has experience with prevention programs as coordinator of the Healthy Tomorrows Coalition in Kodiak, AK, where Kim collaborated with local, regional and state level Native Associations, Mental Health facilities and Public Health departments to reduce the prevalence of suicide and substance abuse in Alaska, including a partnership with the Alaska Wellness Coalitionâs statewide BE [You] underage drinking prevention media campaign. Kim also became certified to teach safeTALK, a suicide awareness program for ages 15 and up. Recently as the Executive Director of the East Providence Prevention Coalition in Rhode Island, Kim led efforts alongside the East Providence Police Department to reduce underage drinking and marijuana use in East Providence through school curriculum and retail compliance checks and Alcohol Purchase Surveys, as well as facilitating Responsible Beverage Service training to alcohol licensee employees that sold or served alcohol. With training in Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma Informed Care, Positive Community Norms and Collective Impact, Kim is currently working towards her Certified Prevention Specialist certification and plans to pursue her Masterâs in Public Health next Spring.
The Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) grant is part of a comprehensive approach to substance use prevention across the Commonwealth.  With funding provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, the SAPC program in Barnstable County is part of a coordinated regional prevention effort. SAPC uses evidence-based strategies including policy, practice, and system change to reduce substance misuse and build capacity throughout the community to address underage drinking and other illicit substance use.   SAPC partners include Monomoy Regional School District, Dennis- Yarmouth Regional School District, Sandwich Public Schools, Cape Cod Community College, Cape Cod Collaborative, and Cape Cod Regional Technical High School.  The SAPC Grant is administered by the Barnstable County Department of Human Services and its activities are integrated with the Regional Substance Abuse Council and the Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative ( MOAPC) to coordinate regional efforts to combat substance use on Cape Cod.
