World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2017

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2017 will be marked by an event at the Yarmouth Senior Center with guest speakers, resource tables, activities and light refreshments.  The event is co-sponsored by the Yarmouth Senior Center and The Cape Cod Elder Abuse Coalition.  The keynote speaker will be Mary Freeley of the Massachusetts’s Attorney General office.

According to the World Health Organization, the global population of people aged 60 years and older will more than double, from 542 million in 1995 to about 1.2 billion in 2025. A study by the Gerontology Institute of UMASS Boston estimates that the Cape’s 60+ population will increase to 43% by 2035.  Approximately 4 to 6% of elderly people worldwide have experienced some form of maltreatment at home.  The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 66/127, designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
