Cape-wide Sticker Shock Campaign reminds adults not to buy alcohol for minors
Barnstable, MA, November 14, 2019 – On Saturday, November 16, teams of Cape Cod youth and adults will “shock” purchasers of alcohol by placing 10,000 warning stickers on multi-packs of beer and other alcohol products in local stores as part of the 16th semi-annual Sticker Shock Campaign. The towns of Falmouth, Bourne, Mashpee, and Yarmouth will be participating in this weekend’s event. Harwich plans to host the event in December.
The stickers have the message: “Parents Who Host Lose the Most: Don’t be a party to teenage drinking.” Gosnold’s Prevention Partnership has led the initiative in previous years, this year partnering with the Barnstable County Regional Substance Use Council’s Prevention Workgroup to begin expanding the program to additional communities. Its purpose is to encourage adults not to purchase alcohol for minors, and to remind them that it is illegal to do so. It also reminds parents not to host parties where alcohol is available to underage youth.
#ProjectStickerShock is a national campaign designed by a group of youth in Pennsylvania in 1998 and has since expanded. Sticker Shock campaigns across the country give cause for community organizations, youth, and alcohol retailers to all work together to combat minors’ access to alcohol.
